2017 DUSA Elections

Notice of Election

The Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) 2017 Elections will be held from Monday 18 September 2017 to Friday 22 September 2017 for the following positions:

Burwood Campus Student Representatives - Twenty five (25) positions
Geelong Campus Student Representatives - Sixteen (16) positions
Warrnambool Campus Student Representatives - Ten (10) positions
Cloud Campus Student Representatives - Seventeen (17) positions
National Union of Students (NUS) Delegates - Seven (7) positions
International Officer - One (1) position
Queer Officer - One (1) position

Nominations and Voting

Only student members of DUSA are able to stand in this election.

Nominations will open at 9:00am Monday 28 August and close at 4:00pm Friday 1 September 2017.

Only student members of DUSA are eligible to nominate and vote for the Student Representatives for the campus for which they are enrolled.

Only student members of DUSA who identify as Queer and are registered to vote in the Queer ballot can vote for the Queer Officer (see below).

Only student members of DUSA who are International Students as defined by the University Records are able to nominate and/or vote in the International Student Ballot.

All students may vote in the election of NUS delegates.

Nomination Forms are available at any DUSA office, on the Elections page of the DUSA website (www.dusa.org.au) or by contacting the Returning Officer (where access to the internet is not available). Cloud Campus students do not need a seconder for their nomination.

Nominations must be lodged with your nearest DUSA office or scanned and emailed direct to the Returning Officer – dusaRO@abovequota.com.au

Postal votes are available for those unable to attend the election in person. Postal Vote Application Forms are available from the Returning Officer or on the DUSA website (www.dusa.org.au).

Completed Postal Vote Application Forms must be received by the Returning Officer no later than 4:00pm Friday, 1st September 2017

Tuesday 19 September 9.30am – 2.30pm

Geelong (Waterfront) campus
Monday 18 September 10.00am – 3.00pm
Tuesday 19 September 10.00am – 3.00pm

Geelong (Waurn Ponds) campus
Monday 18 September 10.00am – 4.00pm
Tuesday 19 September 10.00am – 4.00pm

Burwood campus
Wednesday 20 September 10.00am – 4.00pm
Thursday 21 September 10.00am – 4.00pm
Friday 22 September 10.00am – 4.00pm

Elgar Road Campus
Wednesday 20 September 10.00am – 3.00pm

Cloud Campus polling will be electronic and will run from 10:00am Monday 18 September – 4:00pm Friday 22 September
 

DUSA Roll
The DUSA roll will close at 12pm (noon) on Wednesday, 16 August, 2017. Any student who becomes a member of DUSA after 12noon on Wednesday 16 August 2017 will not be eligible to vote.

Queer Ballot
Elections for the position of Queer Officer are conducted electronically, and a role of registered voters will be kept specifically for this position. Please visit the following link to register to vote or run as a candidate.

Ticket Re-Registrations and Registrations
All tickets previously registered at last year’s annual election may be re-registered commencing 9am on Monday 21 August 2017, until 4pm on Tuesday 22 August 2017.

New tickets may be registered from 9am on Wednesday 23 August 2017, until 4pm on Friday 25 August 2017.

I strongly encourage all those interested in taking part in these elections to make themselves familiar with these important documents as they govern how these elections are run. Please note that all deadlines are strict and cannot be extended. Candidates are strongly urged to lodge their forms well before the deadlines.

Queer Officer Position for 2018

Register to Vote in the 2017 Elections for the Queer Officer position

To be eligible to vote in the elections for the Queer Officer 2018 position, you will need to register on the Queer Officer Electoral Roll.  This separate, securely stored register of voters (“electoral roll”) will be kept and used by the Returning Officer only for the purpose of the elections held for the position of Queer Officer 2018.

For the purpose of these elections for the Queer Officer position, “queer” means any person who self-identifies as:

  • Lesbian;
  • Gay;
  • Bisexual
  • Pansexual;
  • Transgender;
  • Queer;
  • Questioning;
  • Intersex;
  • Genderqueer;
  • Asexual; and / or
  • Being of any other sexual or gender identity outside of heterosexuality and/or cis-gender.

A person may only vote in the annual elections held for the position of Queer Officer if they are:

a) current member of DUSA and student at Deakin University;

b) queer; and

c) registered on the electoral roll created and maintained for the purpose of the election of the Queer Officer position.

Elections held for the position of Queer Officer will be conducted electronically and details on how to vote will only be provided to those students who have registered to vote.

The Electoral Roll will be maintained securely and confidentially and managed in accordance with the provisions of the:

a) Victorian Equal Opportunity Act; and

b) Australian Privacy Principles (APP)

Information on the Queer Officer Position

The specific responsibilities of the Queer Officer are:

a) to promote and support the involvement of queer-identifying students within the University community;

b) to act as a visible, approachable and supportive contact point within DUSA for queer-identifying students;

c) to develop and maintain knowledge of current issues affecting queer-identifying students and the support services available to them; and

d) to promote queer representation and participation within both DUSA and the University community.

All candidates who run for election to the position of Queer Officer must run as individual candidates.  Details on how to run as a candidate for the position of Queer Officer will be posted on the DUSA website shortly.
