Burwood Link Approval

Statement from DUSA Student Council

DUSA is thrilled to announce a huge win for Burwood students – the cross-campus bridge has been approved!

The State Minister for Planning, following a long and complex process, has stepped in and approved a planning application for a pedestrian bridge connecting the main Burwood campus with the Elgar Road campus.

Without this bridge, students have been forced to cross Gardiners Creek Reserve that has poor lighting, unstable ground and no disability access.

It has been a significant issue for a long period of time, where we have heard from many students who have felt unsafe and discriminated against. DUSA has been petitioning the University and working hard to ensure the student voice is heard.

This is a great result, once the bridge is completed students will gain unprecedented access and a much greater degree of personal safety. Students with a disability will have the freedom to more easily between the two campuses. This is a great result, we commend the University on their determination and resolve, and the State Planning Minister for providing a great outcome for students, and the Deakin Community at Burwood.

Construction is stated to commence mid-2016 and will take nine to twelve months to complete. DUSA will continue to be in constant dialogue with the University to ensure students making the crossing during the construction phase are not disadvantaged. Information will be shared when available.
