Current Deakin Students

e:-) Connect is the compulsory email sent to all students by the University on DUSA's behalf (as you know, DUSA isn't actually part of Deakin itself). It is not an optional newsletter. If you're an enrolled Deakin student, please understand that e:-) Connect is not 'spam' - it is the official email Deakin and DUSA use to communicate important matters like: cut-off dates, graduation information and assessment details to all students. So if you were not to receive the email, you could find yourself being surprised by failing subjects and worse, such as being excluded from the University and not being permitted to complete your course.

Not having read e:-) Connect is NOT considered a valid excuse by the University when trying to have such decisions overturned. You can't afford to ignore e:-) Connect. But it's not all serious. e:-) Connect is also used to communicate fun and exciting points of interest like student discounts, competitions, freebies, student campaigns, leisure events, and much more. The onus is on you, the student, to ensure that you're receiving and reading e:-) Connect each fortnight. If you don't use your Deakin email address, you can have your Deakin emails forwarded to an email address of your choosing, such as a work email address, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. Visit the ITS website to change or set your email redirection. to ensure that you keep receiving e:-) Connect, be sure to check this redirection regularly (as redirections revert after a few months for security purposes).

Current Deakin students cannot unsubscribe from e:-) Connect, as it is essential that all students are kept up-to-date with university matters. Prior to e:-) Connect being created, Deakin students regularly had their inboxes flooded with many long emails; one for each item anyone in any Faculty on any campus wished to send. There was no limit to who could send an email to students, which meant that all students received all emails about all Faculties. Naturally, this resulted in students refusing to read their emails because 95% of them were irrelevant and were a complete waste of their time.

This is why e:-) Connect came about. It was a great way of listing all important information in one neat newsletter. It also meant we only had to list a small portion of the whole message and provide a link to more information for anyone who was interested in reading more. Most importantly, though, it removed the problem of students having their inboxes "spammed" by Deakin staff members on a daily basis.

Hopefully you can see that the alternative is something we wish to avoid, so relying on e:-) Connect to provide you with the information you need to know (as well as discounts all students can use and the occasional freebie) is the surest way to prevent your inbox being overloaded with Deakin emails. It ensures you can stay on top of your enrolment and other vital academic and administrative matters.

Past Deakin Students

Unfortunately, DUSA doesn't have a record of (or access to) student enrolment records. We send the completed e:-) Connect email to the Division of Student Life (DSL) at Deakin University (as you know, DUSA isn't actually part of Deakin itself), and DSL mails it out to all currently-enrolled Deakin students on DUSA's behalf.

With that in mind, if you've finished your studies at Deakin but you're still receiving these emails, Deakin needs to update its records. Due to the Privacy Act, you need to inform Deakin of this yourself. They will not action a request submitted by anyone else (because for all they know, it could be a bogus claim). You need to contact your Faculty in the first instance and, failing that, you could try emailing Deakin's Academic and Administrative Services Division (AASD).

Additionally, if you are receiving your Deakin emails by having them redirected to an email address other than your Deakin account (such as a work email address, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc), another way around this problem is to visit the ITS website and remove your email redirection. We're sure Deakin will eventually catch up to revising their records, but in the meantime, if you stop redirecting your Deakin emails to your private account you won't receive anything sent to you by Deakin.

When the university eventually removes you from its list of enrolled students, the problem will be solved. And this way, you don't need to be bothered by Deakin's emails in the meantime. We hope these suggestions will prove helpful. All the best with your future career.
