Indigenous Games Blog 3

DUSA is pleased to present our student blogs from the Indigenous Games! We have blog 3 up for your viewing. Check back everyday for more updates. Go Dragons!

First of all I would like to acknowledge the Awabakel people whose land we hold this prestigious event. Basketball kicked off the 2015 NITESG. It was more than all of us ever expected, a white wash. Everyone was cheering and the Dragons had the crowd up on their feet! The good start continued throughout the opening day, as we went through our pool undefeated! How awesome was it to start the week?!! We then continued our form into the Quarter Final with a 35-9 belting of University of Newcastle 2. This meant we had an all Victorian Semi Final against the University of Melbourne. With such a fierce rivalry, the game got heated not only on the court, but also in the stands. Deakin got off to an early lead, before being pegged back by a determined Melbourne.  Deakin managed to hold onto the win 18-15. Five wins in a row! Couldn’t be happier to get off to a great start for the week. Reno French was definitely the star of the day leading from the front, with Will Bern a close second.

The comradery, sportsmanship, teamwork, cheer squad and the bench subs were all amazing, and with great organization, confidence followed.  The game plan got us wins and everyone stuck to the plan. We all knew our positions and our job. I give praise to us all even those who did not play they were the glue to our mortar. Cheering us on from the sidelines.

Last but not the least, our managers from DUSA are a wonderful help both Jack and Ed deserve a huge round of applause. The smiles that never left their faces were priceless, great guys. Thank you to Newcastle University for being the hosts of this event in the 20th year of the National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games.
