O' What a Week

The beginning of a new University year always brings an infectious energy and enthusiasm across all campuses, and this hype is never more present, than during our legendary O’Week. During five action-packed days from Monday 26 Feb – Friday 2 March, Deakin University was buzzing with activity at its Burwood, Geelong and Warrnambool campuses.

In addition to finding out essential course information, students immersed themselves in a range of activities and Monday certainly kicked off with a bang with Market Days at Burwood and Geelong Waterfront. Both campuses were pumping with roving entertainment, stalls, special performances, free giveaways, and of course, our DUSA Membership tent.

We loved seeing lines stretch around the corner as students waited to buy their gold, silver or bronze membership and receive the iconic DUSA hoodie. And what’s more, we loved seeing more and more students wearing the hoodies and backpacks around campus throughout the week!

That night, students jumped and flipped at trampoline parks before dancing the night away at Melbourne’s Glow Party and Geelong’s Double Denim Party, in which we were pleasantly surprised to see students dust off the old blue and rock their outfits with confidence. Our inaugural night Carnival at Warrnambool was also smashing success with students meeting and mingling in a very chilled and relaxed environment.

Tuesday brought another round of Market Days and parties, including one of the biggest nights of the year – the DUSA Beach Party! Over 2,000 students donned their finest Hawaiian shirts and floral leis as they enjoyed a spectacular line-up of entertainment at Melbourne Crown Casino with headliner DJ Will Sparks.

On Wednesday, students battled against each other in a game of quick feet and quick minds at Amazing Race, whilst Thursday catered for a more laid-back vibe at our Outdoor Movie Night with the hilarious flick, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

The Mystery Bus Tour was once again a highlight of O’Week with students taking over the streets of Geelong dressed in vibrant and imaginative costumes, including superheroes, mad scientists, pirates, Disney characters and more! This year, a bus of Warrnambool hippies also joined the Mystery Bus Tour for the first time and it was great to have both campuses involved in this colourful event. And it didn’t stop there, for the first time there was a Cloud Orientation Weekend, Saturday at Burwood saw 152 students meet each other and interact with DUSA and Deakin Student Life to settle into study online at Deakin. Yard games, lollies and stress balls were a hit with the kids while Zak provided musical entertainment.

Geelong Waterfront hosted the Sunday session for 78 students, Laura brought her guitar and serenaded the crowd. The DUSA bookshops was kept busy with Cloud Students offered 10% discount on the day. This was certainly a successful initiative that will be bigger and better next year.

Deakin University Student Association President, Lauren Hustwaite, said it was fantastic to see months of planning finally coming together to deliver an action-packed week for Deakin students.

“There is no denying that O’Week is DUSA’s flagship event of the year, and I’ve been really fortunate to experience the different personalities of each campus this year - from the buzzing Market Days in Burwood, to the more relaxed and chill vibe of the Warrnambool Carnival. At the end of the day though, everyone is there for the same reason; to meet new people, learn more about Deakin University, and most importantly, to have fun!

“I still remember my first O’Week experience and actually signing up to DUSA at the Waurn Ponds membership stall. It’s pretty amazing to think that I’m now the President. You never know what paths O’Week can lead you down, and I strongly encourage all new and returning students to make the most of all the opportunities their University experience provides,” said Lauren.
