Notice of Election

2025 ANNUAL ELECTIONS

Monday 1 September - Friday 5 September 2025

The Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) 2025 Annual Election polling will be held from Monday 1 September to Friday 5 September 2025.

The following positions are to be elected:

19 Burwood Campus Electoral Delegates; plus

1 Burwood Queer Representative;

11 Geelong Campus Electoral Delegates; plus

1 Geelong Queer Representative;

5 Warrnambool Campus Electoral Delegates;

7 National Union of Students (NUS) Delegates

NOMINATIONS AND VOTING - ELECTION OF ELECTORAL DELEGATES

Only student members of DUSA are eligible to stand in this election. Only student members of DUSA who identify as queer and are registered to vote in the queer ballot can vote for the Queer Representatives (see further details below).

Nominations will open for Electoral Delegates at 9:00am Monday 11 August and close at 4:00pm Friday 15 August 2025.

Nominations for the election of Student Representatives (and Officers) will occur at the Electoral College phase of the election timetable. Further details are outlined below.

ALL STUDENTS MAY VOTE IN THE ELECTION OF NUS DELEGATES

Nomination Forms are available on the Elections page of the DUSA website (www.dusa.org.au) or by contacting the Returning Officer (where access to the internet is not available).

Students defined in the University Roll as 'Online' do not need a seconder for their nomination.

Nominations from all campuses must be scanned and emailed direct to the Returning Officer – Josh Gilligan at Email: dusa@omegaconsultinggroup.com.au

Please ensure you write clearly on all forms.

Online votes are available for those unable to attend the elections in person (conditions apply). Application Forms are available by contacting the Returning Officer or on the DUSA website (www.dusa.org.au).

Proxy form (for international students currently residing overseas) must be received by the Returning Officer no later than 4:00pm Friday, 15 August 2025.

Voting application forms from online students must be received by the Returning Officer no later than 4:00pm Friday 22 August.

POLLING TIMES

Polling week will commence on Monday 1 September 2024 and will close at 4:00pm on Friday 5 September 2025 – see polling times below:


Please Note: Campaigning is not allowed to take place inside the buildings where polling booths are located, in any DUSA spaces or in Deakin Libraries.

Monday 1 September 10.00am – 3.00pm

Tuesday 2 September 10.00am – 3.00pm

Online students as defined in the University Roll can nominate and vote for electoral delegates for the Geelong or Burwood Campus depending on whether their residential address falls under a Melb Metropolitan LGA or a Rural LGA (see details in Election Regulations).

Any online students who are remotely located and unable to attend a campus to vote can request via a form provided on the DUSA elections webpage to be registered to vote online.

DUSA ROLL

The DUSA roll will close at 12pm noon on Tuesday 5 August. Any student who becomes a member of DUSA after 12pm noon on Tuesday 5 August will not be eligible to vote.

QUEER REPRESENTATIVES

Elections for the position of Queer Representatives are conducted electronically, and a roll of registered voters will be kept specifically for this position.

In order to vote in the Geelong or Burwood Queer Representative ballot, you must be a registered voter. Registrations open at 9:00am AEST on Monday 4 August and close at 5pm on Thursday 4 September 2025 (the penultimate day of polling).

TICKET RE-REGISTRATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS

All tickets previously registered in last years' Annual Election may be re-registered commencing 9am on Wednesday 6 August, up until 4pm on Friday 8 August 2025.

New tickets may also be registered from 9am on Wednesday 6 August up until 4pm on Friday 8 August 2025.

ELECTORAL COLLEGE

Nominations for Electoral College (including Student Representatives and Officers) will open at 9am on Monday 8 September 2025 and will close at 4pm on Friday 12 September 2025. The Nomination Form for Student Representatives will be available on the DUSA website or by request from the Returning Officer from Friday 5 September 2025.

Ticket Registration opens at 4pm (for eligible authorised officers) on Friday 12 September 2025; and closes (for eligible authorised officers) at 4pm on Monday 15 September 2025.

Electoral College Voting will be held online on Thursday 18 September 2025 where the ‘Electoral Delegates’ will elect the following positions:

Nominations and Voting – Election of Student Representatives (and Officers)

Only Electoral Delegates are eligible to vote in the election of Student Representatives and Officers. Electoral Delegates are only eligible to vote for Student Representatives of the campus they are elected from.

Only student members of DUSA are eligible to nominate for the Student Representatives positions of the campus for which they are enrolled.

Only student members of DUSA who are international students as defined by the University Records are able to nominate for the International Representative position.

Only student members of DUSA who identify as a woman are able to nominate for the Women’s Representative position.

Only student members of DUSA who are post-graduate students as defined by the University Records are able to nominate for the Postgraduate Representatives Ballot.

Student members of DUSA who are identified in the Deakin University Student roll as 'Online students' may nominate for the position of Accessibility and Online Students Representative at either the Burwood campus (Melbourne Metropolitan) or Geelong campus (Rural), depending on whether their residential address falls under a Melbourne Metropolitan LGA or a Rural LGA (see detailed information in DUSA Election Regulations). Online students who reside Interstate can nominate for the Accessibility and Online Students Representative position at Burwood Campus.

I strongly encourage all those interested in taking part in the 2025 Annual Election to make themselves familiar with these important documents as they govern how these elections are run.

Please note that all deadlines are strict and cannot be extended. Candidates are strongly urged to lodge their forms well before the deadlines.

ELECTION OF QUEER REPRESENTATIVES

REGISTER TO VOTE FOR QUEER REPRESENTATIVES IN THE 2025 ANNUAL ELECTION

To be eligible to vote for Queer Representatives in the 2025 Annual Election you must be enrolled on the Queer Representative electoral roll.

This separate and securely-stored register of voters will be kept and used by the Returning Officer only for the purpose of the 2025 Annual Election.

The Queer Representative electoral roll is managed in accordance with the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

For the purpose of the 2025 Annual Election, “queer” means any person who self-identifies as:

(i) any part of the LGBTQIA+ community or is questioning; and/or

(ii) being of any other identity or expression outside of heterosexuality and cis-gender.

A person may only vote in the 2025 Annual Election for Queer Representatives if they are:

(iii) a current member of DUSA and student at Deakin University;

(iii) registered on the electoral roll created and maintained for the purpose of the election of the Queer Representative positions.

Elections held for the position of Queer Representatives will be conducted electronically and details on how to vote will only be provided to those students who have registered to vote.

NOMINATIONS FOR QUEER REPRESENTATIVES IN THE 2025 ANNUAL ELECTION

Nominations for Queer Representatives opens at 9:00am Monday 11 August and closes at 4:00pm Friday 15 August 2025. A nomination can be lodged using the DUSA nomination form.

INFORMATION RELATING TO QUEER REPRESENTATIVES

The specific responsibilities of Queer Representatives are:

(i) to promote and support the involvement of queer-identifying students within the University community;

(ii) to act as a visible, approachable and supportive contact point within DUSA for queer identifying students;

(iii) to develop and maintain knowledge of current issues affecting queer identifying students and the support services available to them; and

(iv) to promote queer representation and participation within both DUSA and the University community.

All candidates who nominate for the position of Queer Representative must run as an individual candidate. Details on how to nominate as a candidate for the position of Queer Representative will be posted on the ‘Elections’ page of the DUSA website (www.dusa.org.au).
