2021 ANNUAL ELECTIONS

Monday 30 August - Friday 17 September 2021

The Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) 2021 Annual Election will be held from Monday 30 August to Friday 17 September.

The following positions are to be elected:

15 Burwood Campus Electoral Delegates; plus

1 Burwood Campus Coordinator;

1 Women’s Representative;

1 Queer Representative;

1 Postgraduate Representative;

1 International Representative;

1 Events and Activities Representative;

1 Clubs and Societies Representative;

1 Diversity and Belonging Representative; and

1 Accessibility and Services Representative

11 Geelong Campus Electoral Delegates; plus

1 Geelong Campus Coordinator;

1 Women’s Representative;

1 Queer Representative;

1 Postgraduate Representative;

1 International Representative;

1 Events and Activities Representative;

1 Clubs and Societies Representative;

1 Diversity and Belonging Representative; and

1 Accessibility and Services Representative

5 Warrnambool Campus Electoral Delegates; plus

NOMINATIONS AND VOTING

Nominations for the positions listed above will be open from 9am Monday 9 August to 4pm Friday 13 August.

Only student members of DUSA are eligible to nominate and participate in the election of Student Representatives at the campus for which they are enrolled.

Only student members of DUSA who identify as queer and are registered to participate in the election of Queer Representatives are eligible to nominate for and participate in the election of Queer Representatives.

Only student members of DUSA who are international students as defined by the University roll are eligible to nominate for the positions of International Representatives.

Only student members of DUSA who identify as women and are either listed as such on the University roll or have notified the Returning Officer of their identification as per the method prescribed are eligible to nominate for and participate in the election of Women’s Representatives.

Only student members of DUSA who are postgraduate students as defined by the University roll are able to nominate for the positions of Postgraduate Representatives.

The eligibility to stand for Equity Representative is set out in section 12.6 of the Election Regulations.

All students of the University are eligible to nominate for and participate in the election of NUS Delegates.

Nomination applications are available on the ‘Elections’ page of the DUSA website (www.dusa.org.au) or by contacting the Returning Officer (where access to the internet is not available).

Postal vote applications are available on the ‘Elections’ page of the DUSA website (www.dusa.org.au) or by contacting the Returning Officer (where access to the internet is not available). Completed postal vote applications must be received by the Returning Officer no later than 4pm Friday 13 August.

Proxy vote applications

Members residing outside of Australia for any time during the election period are eligible to proxy their ballot to another student member pursuant to Regulation 27 of the Election Regulations. The period for the acceptance of applications to participate in the Annual Election via proxy will be accepted concurrently with postal vote applications.

POLLING TIMES

Postal Vote Polling will be open for all Campuses (Burwood, Geelong, Cloud and Warrnambool) for 3 weeks commencing 9am on Monday 30 August through to 4pm on Friday 17 September 2021.

Only polling for Queer Representatives will be held online.

DUSA ROLL

The DUSA roll will close at 12pm Midday on Tuesday 3 August. Any student who becomes a member of DUSA after 12pm on Tuesday 3 August will not be eligible to participate in the Annual Election (except for the election of NUS Delegates)

QUEER REPRESENTATIVES

The Queer Representatives elections will be conducted electronically and a role of registered voters will be kept specifically for this position.

Registrations to participate in the election of Queer Representatives opens on Monday 2 August and closes at 5pm on Thursday 16 September 2021.

TICKET RE-REGISTRATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS

All tickets previously registered for the 2020 Annual Election may be re-registered commencing 9am on Wednesday 4 August until 4pm on Friday 6 August.

New tickets may also be registered from 9am on Wednesday 4 August until 4pm on Friday 6 August.

SIGNATURES

In cases where signatures are required on relevant applications and other documents, only signatures which are a true representation of the applicant’s signature will be accepted. Handwritten signatures are preferred however, pictures of the applicant’s signature, or signatures written digitally by hand may be accepted at the discretion of the Returning Officer. Typed text as a signature will not be accepted, nor will applications that require signatures and are unsigned.

Please note that all deadlines are strict and cannot be extended. Candidates are strongly urged to lodge their application well before specified deadlines. Applications received after applicable deadlines will not be accepted.

ELECTION OF QUEER REPRESENTATIVES

REGISTER TO VOTE FOR QUEER REPRESENTATIVES IN THE 2021 ANNUAL ELECTION

To be eligible to vote for Queer Representatives in the 2021 Annual Election you must be enrolled on the Queer Representative electoral roll.

This separate and securely-stored register of voters will be kept and used by the Returning Officer only for the purpose of the 2021 Annual Election.

The Queer Representative electoral roll is managed in accordance with the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

For the purpose of the 2021 Annual Election, “queer” means any person who self-identifies as:

(i) any part of the LGBTQIA+ community or is questioning; and/or

(ii) being of any other identity or expression outside of heterosexuality and cis-gender.

A person may only vote in the 2021 Annual Election for Queer Representatives if they are:

(iii) a current member of DUSA and student at Deakin University;

(iii) registered on the electoral roll created and maintained for the purpose of the election of the Queer Representative positions.

Elections held for the position of Queer Representatives will be conducted electronically and details on how to vote will only be provided to those students who have registered to vote.

The Queer Representative electoral roll will close 5:00pm Thursday 16 September.

NOMINATIONS FOR QUEER REPRESENTATIVES IN THE 2021 ANNUAL ELECTION

Nominations for Queer Representatives open 9:00am Monday 9 August and close at 4:00pm Friday 13 August 2021. A nomination can be lodged using the DUSA nomination form.

INFORMATION RELATING TO QUEER REPRESENTATIVES

The specific responsibilities of Queer Representatives are:

(i) to promote and support the involvement of queer-identifying students within the University community;

(ii) to act as a visible, approachable and supportive contact point within DUSA for queer identifying students;

(iii) to develop and maintain knowledge of current issues affecting queer identifying students and the support services available to them; and

(iv) to promote queer representation and participation within both DUSA and the University community.

All candidates who nominate for the position of Queer Representative must run as an individual candidate. Details on how to nominate as a candidate for the position of Queer Representative will be posted on the ‘Elections’ page of the DUSA website (www.dusa.org.au).
