The Student Advocacy and Support Service (SASS) at DUSA run a campaign every year to raise awareness around Academic Integrity at University. For Trimester 2 2021 we are running a video competition called ‘Create your integrity’ you can find out more information here!

We are asking the following questions as part of our competition, and here are some of our top tips to help you with your entry and to learn more about academic integrity.

Our first question…

You are looking for sources online. You find a preview of an old assignment for your same assessment...however you have to upload one of your previous assignments to access it. What do you decide to do and why?

Not sure what to do? Here are some of our top tips!

  • If a website asks you to upload one of your own assignments to access content, you should NEVER do this. If you share your work, you never know where it may end up.
  • If you upload your assignment to a website, it is likely that other students will have access to your work and may claim it as their own. Sharing your work may result in an academic integrity allegation.
  • We recommend you stay clear of these websites and instead access Deakin supports to find legitimate resources.

Our second question…

Your friend calls you; they are super stressed and don’t know how to write their assessment. They ask for a copy of your assignment, what do you do and why?

Not sure what to do? Here are some of our top tips!

  • We understand wanting to help your friend. However, sharing an assessment can lead to more harm than good. If your friend uses all or part of your work this can lead to an allegation of collusion. Even though it is your work.
  • Even if your friend just uses your assignment as reference for the formatting of their own assignment. Deakin’s detection methods can pick up similarities like this. So, it is not worth the risk.
  • If your friend contacts you, you should refer them to the Deakin supports available.

Our final question…

Why is it important that students complete and protect their own work?

Not sure why it is important? Here are some of our top tips

  • Sharing your work can impact your integrity as a student and as a professional. When work is shared you lose ownership over it. Others may take credit for the hard work that you have put in.
  • If your work is not protected. Those you have shared it with may share it with others.
  • If you were hiring someone based on their qualification, would you want to hire someone who has copied the work of others and therefore lacks knowledge in that area? Sharing your work does not only impact assignments, but it can also impact your future.
