The below template can be used for drafting an application. For individualised advice regarding your circumstances and supporting documentation, please contact a DUSA Advocate.

1. What are your special circumstances?

Here are the options available to select, please delete the ones that aren’t relevant.

  • Medical
  • Employment Related
  • Family/ Personal/ Related
  • Natural Disaster
2. Date your circumstances first occurred/changed:

Provide the date only, no other information can be entered in this section.

3. Details of circumstances:

Your application needs to show that the circumstances were beyond your control, and that they occurred (or escalated) after census date. Include details such as:

  • If you were impacted by new circumstances, explain how these circumstances made their full impact on or after the census date.
  • If you were impacted by an escalation/change of existing circumstances, explain what occurred on or after the census date.
  • Provide a timeline of dates, including events and appointments.
  • Outline your symptoms.
  • Explain how your circumstances were beyond your control, unusual, abnormal and/or uncommon.
4. Impact on your ability to study:

Your application needs to show that your circumstances made it impracticable for you to complete your unit requirements. Include details related to impact on:

  • Your expected private study.
  • Specified weekly unit requirements (lecturers, tutorials, other compulsory attendance requirements).
  • Ability to complete assessments and/ or sit examinations.
  • Ability to complete any other course requirements.
  • Please note: If you successfully completed other units in the same trimester, you are required to provide a clear explanation outlining why you were unable to pass the specific unit(s) in your application. The University will assess the reasons why some units were completed successfully while others were not.

5. Additional special circumstances (if applicable)

Additional special circumstances should only be added if they had a direct impact on your ability to study the units listed and are different to the circumstances you have already explained. You will require separate supporting documentation for each additional circumstance added. If including additional circumstances, please repeat the above sections, referring to the new date.
