If you are a Deakin University student with an upcoming placement, here are some tips and resources to help you prepare.
The DUSA Student Advocacy Support Service (SASS) team understands the value of placements during your studies at Deakin University. Placements are a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical experience. However, we also recognise that they can present both personal and academic challenges. To maximise the benefits of your placement, consider the following tips and resources.
Read and review any placement materials provided to you at the beginning of the unit. This may include a specific placement guide or information embedded within your unit guide.
Ensure you have completed any pre-placement requirements before your placement begins. These may be mandatory and could determine whether you pass or fail the unit.
It is important maintain a courteous, professional, and respectful demeanour throughout your placement. This includes being punctual, actively participating, and adhering to the organisation's protocols as well as university policies and procedures.
While completing your placement, take time to reflect on your progress. Don’t wait until the end of your placement to raise concerns, as this could impact your ability to pass. Report any issues early to both your Unit Chair and the placement team if you're facing challenges. Journalling can be a great way to track your placement experience. You’ll be able to refer to your journal if needed.
Reaching out to the Deakin Counselling team is a great way to talk through any concerns you may be experiencing on placement.
Attending Deakin THRIVE sessions is another great way to support your wellbeing during placement. These sessions can also help with study challenges such as procrastination and time management.
Financial stress before or during your placement can be overwhelming. We recommend connecting with the DUSA Financial Wellbeing team to help organise your budget and finances ahead of time.
Make sure you are eating well, getting enough sleep, and looking after your health while on placement. Balancing your study load and placement commitments can be demanding. We encourage you to make use of DUSA’s welfare support options, including DUSA Food Pantry and DUSA Free Breakfast. If you're experiencing financial hardship, consider booking a visit to the DUSA Survival Centre.
If you are facing difficulties during your placement and are seeking independent advice, or have failed a unit because of a failed placement, you can always reach out to the DUSA Advocacy team. Advocacy support is for all Deakin students and is free and confidential.
