Welcome to our DUSA Clubs Spotlight Series where we aim to shine a light on some of the amazing clubs we have at DUSA! The first club to step into the spotlight is Deakin Fashion and Culture Society (DFCS). Formed in 2024, DFCS is based at Burwood and currently has 93 members. We asked DFCS Club President, Devanshi Tyagi, to tell us a bit more about the club and how it uses fashion and creativity to promote self-expression, sustainability and connection.
What is the aim/purpose of DFCS?
To promote sustainability in fashion, celebrate individuality, and create an inclusive space for self-expression across diverse backgrounds. We aim to uphold ethical fashion practices while making creativity accessible and fun.
What sort of activities do you organise?
We run clothes swaps, embroidery sessions, thrift crawls (Op Shop Hops), colour analysis workshops, picnics, and fashion-themed social events like speed friending, styling games, and streaming runway shows. These events are all about connection – many of our members met their closest uni friends through DFCS events!
What have been some of the highlights so far?
Winning New Club of the Year – Burwood in 2024 was a highlight, and two of our events (Clothes Swap and Op Shop Hop), have taken out DUSA Club Event of the Month. The biggest highlight though is watching friendships spark at our events.
Any future activities being planned?
Yes! Our next event is a movie night screening Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Thursday 4th September, 6:30pm – 9:00pm at Burwood campus (LC1.003).
How does being a part of DFCS add to a member’s university experience?
It’s a chance to connect, create, and dress up without pressure. Members find community, explore fashion in fun ways, and take a breather from uni stress – all while learning about sustainable choices.
What would you say to people who may be interested in joining?
You don’t need to be fashion savvy – just curious and open! This is a welcoming space with zero judgment and lots of excuses to dress up, meet people, and have fun. Most of our events are free for DFCS members.
Anything else you would like to add?
We hope to see you at our next event – good vibes guaranteed!! And if you’ve got a skill (embroidery, styling, upcycling, anything creative!) you’d love to share please reach out to us. We love learning from each other.
