Clubs Spotlight: Burwood Student Theatre Company

Welcome to our DUSA Clubs Spotlight Series where we shine a light on some of the amazing clubs we have at DUSA! The club we're profiling in this article is definitely no stranger to the spotlight – it’s the Burwood Student Theatre Company (BuST Co.)!

BuST Co. has over 80 members and is one of our longest running clubs, having been in operation for over 20 years. We asked BuST Co. Secretary, Lotte Papson, to tell us a bit about the club and how it offers members a chance to get involved in live productions and connect with a community of theatre lovers.

What is the aim/purpose of BuST Co.?

To promote the spirit of community through theatre production and theatre related events.

What sort of activities do you organise?

We do two or three productions every year, as well as a variety of monthly events such as karaoke, table reads, improv nights and more!

What have been some of the highlights so far?

One of our highlights show-wise was our 2023 production of BPM Cabaret. This was the inaugural performance of an annual collaboration between Deakin Pride and Deakin Music which has continued over the years. In its first year, we won not only Club Event of the Month but also Club Event of the Year - Burwood, and its legacy lives on with this year’s performance winning Club Event of the Month in May.

Any future activities being planned?

In mid-September we’re putting on our production of the timeless classic Pride and Prejudice! Furthermore, to round off the year, we’re having a barbeque to raise money for the Cancer Council!

How does being a part of BuST Co. add to a member’s university experience?

Being part of a club allows you to find your people and join a community that shares your interests. For our club, it also helps members connect with other actors and opportunities from the wider theatre community and even other theatre companies!

What would you say to people who may be interested in joining?

Please join! We accept anybody and everybody, all ages and skill levels, experience or no experience, we’d love to have you! Whether onstage, backstage or offstage, we’re very keen on growing our community and keeping our legacy going for 20 years more.
